Managing Others   Accreditation

All good leaders know how to manage resources like people, time and materials within a set of constraints or boundaries and a structure of relative priorities. Good leaders have to switch hats from leading to managing often each day.

A good manager:

Is analytical, structured, controlled, deliberate, and orderly.
Uses the power and logic of the mind.
Considers the dangers.
Concentrates on short-term or immediate results.
Assesses and scrutinises performance.
Pursues the tangible.
Controls.
Imposes discipline.
Instructs.
Manages goals and objectives.
Corrects strategies and solves problems, focusing on goals, resources, organisation structure or people.
Formulates policies.
Takes charge.
Is tough-minded.

Many people in everyday circumstances use management skills or leadership skills or a combination of both. You may find yourself in a situation where you may have to micro-manage people or events in order to get quick and definite results. At times like these, you have to be strong and tough-minded without being disrespectful.

Management and leadership are two different mentalities and functions that cannot and should not be separated, because good leaders have excellent management skills. Competent management is essential in any organisation, given the need for well-documented objectives, reports, evaluations, plans etc.

A manager has a larger impact on the overall success of the organisation’s profitability, thus a lack of leadership has the greatest effect, both positive and negative.
